Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information RecipeBackup collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using RecipeBackup, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information We Collect

Account information. If you create an account, we collect information such as your email address, password (stored in hashed form), and any profile details you choose to provide.

Recipe activity. If you save recipes while logged in, we store that activity against your account so it's there when you come back. If we add features like notes or reviews in the future, this section will be updated to cover them.

Cookies & similar technologies. We use cookies to keep you logged in, remember your preferences (like light/dark mode), and understand how the site is used. You can review and manage cookie categories at any time using the "Cookie Settings" link in the site footer.

Make It preferences (local storage). Make It's cooking assistant lets you pick a voice, adjust playback volume, choose an AI mode, and toggle Frugal Mode. If you're not logged in, these choices are saved only in your browser's local storage on that device — they never leave your browser and aren't sent to us. If you're logged in, we instead save your AI mode and Frugal Mode choices to your account (so they follow you to another device or browser), and keep a matching cookie on that device for quick access on your next visit. Your voice pick is saved to your account per device (identified by a non-identifying signal derived from your browser type) rather than as one shared choice, since available voices differ between a phone and a computer.

Usage data. We may automatically collect technical information like your IP address, browser type, device information, and pages visited, to help us operate and improve the Service.

Linked AI API keys. If you connect your own Anthropic or OpenAI account to Make It's AI Mode, we store the API key you provide encrypted at rest and use it only to send your own voice commands to that provider and return its response to you. See "Linked AI / Your Own API Keys" in our Terms of Service for the full details on how that key is stored, used, and how you can remove it.

Payment information. If you subscribe to Hosted AI or purchase an AI credit top-up, your payment is handled entirely by our payment processor, Stripe. We never see or store your full card number, CVV, or other raw card details — those go directly to Stripe. We do receive and store limited billing-related information from Stripe, such as your subscription/customer ID, subscription status, and transaction history, so we can grant AI credit and show you your billing status in your account. Your use of Stripe's checkout is also subject to Stripe's Privacy Policy.

To provide, maintain, and secure the Service, including keeping you signed in
To personalize your experience, such as showing saved or recently viewed recipes
To communicate with you about your account or respond to requests you send us
To understand usage patterns so we can improve RecipeBackup
To detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, or security issues

3. Cookie Choices

Non-essential cookies (such as analytics) are only set with your permission. You can change your cookie preferences at any time via the Cookie Settings link in the footer of every page. Essential cookies required for basic site functionality, like staying logged in, cannot be disabled through that tool because the Service can't function properly without them.

4. Sharing of Information

We don't sell your personal information. We may share information with service providers who help us run RecipeBackup (for example, hosting or email delivery), and only to the extent needed for them to perform those services. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, or property of RecipeBackup or others.

We use Google reCAPTCHA to help protect our login and signup forms from bots and abuse. Your use of reCAPTCHA is subject to Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

If you subscribe to Hosted AI or purchase an AI credit top-up, we share the information needed to process that payment (such as your email address and the amount charged) with Stripe, our payment processor. See "Payment information" above for more on what we do and don't receive back from Stripe.

5. Data Retention

We keep account information for as long as your account is active, except where we need to retain it to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes.

6. Your Choices & Rights

You can review and update most of your account information from your profile settings at any time. You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, or ask us to export it, by reaching out through the contact form in your account settings. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local privacy law.

7. Children's Privacy

RecipeBackup is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

8. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above.
